Ireland hosts the vast majority of this relatively small (40,000 strong) population of Light-bellied Brent goose during the winter months, making it the single most important waterbird species in the country in numerical terms. It is a high-arctic migrant, breeding as far north as any bird in the world (northern Ellesmere Island, Canada) and is one of relatively few species with a routine trans-Atlantic migration.

Our broad group are actively involved in a range of long-term research projects examining many aspects of the species ecology and involves activities over 30 degrees of latitude from northern France to the high-arctic breeding grounds. Our principal study areas are a range of sites around the Irish coast, the western coast of Iceland and various field sites in the Queen Elizabeth Islands in Arctic Canada.
